Novo Nordisk reported the Wegovy pill surpassing three million prescriptions in just over five months from its January 2026 US launch.

For context, Novo has reported the Wegovy brand overall as having been prescribed for approximately 3.2 million people in the US since the injectable's 2021 approval.

What the rate suggests

That needle avoidance was a genuine barrier rather than a preference. A product reaching that volume in five months is not capturing switchers from an existing product at the margins; it is reaching people who were not treated.

That has a bearing on how to read the market. The compounded sector's growth from 2022 was widely attributed to price. This suggests route of administration was independently limiting demand, and that two barriers were being conflated.

The supply point

Novo stated the pill is produced in the US with robust supply on hand at launch — a deliberate contrast with the 2022 to 2024 shortage years that created the compounded market in the first place.

Whether supply holds at this volume is the question. Three million prescriptions in five months is a demand curve steeper than the one that produced the original shortage.

What it means competitively

Orforglipron followed in April 2026 as a small molecule with no food or water restrictions, which is easier to manufacture than an oral peptide and removes the administration burden. A second oral small molecule reported phase 2 results in June.

The oral category is contested, and competition at that end is the mechanism most likely to hold the $149 entry price down or push it lower.
